Dermabrasion

What is dermabrasion and when is it indicated?

Dermabrasion has been performed by dermatologists for many years. It is a surgical skin planning technique that mechanically removes the top layer of skin and makes it smoother as a new layer replaces the damaged skin. Dermabrasion is a relatively difficult technique to master and many physicians prefer lasers or other devices. However, there are certain deep acne scarring cases which may improve more with dermabrasion than with other procedures.

Dermabrasion is commonly used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by accidents or previous surgery, or to reduce the definition of fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth. The dermabrasion treatment procedure is also sometimes used to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses. Dermabrasion treatment can be performed on small areas of skin or on the entire face.

In general, dermabrasion is used to treat deeper imperfections such as acne scars, whereas chemical peels are used more often to treat fine wrinkles and sun damage.

What happens prior to surgery and how does dermabrasion work?

Before dermatology surgery, a complete history and physical exam is conducted and photography of the face is taken. Local anesthetic nerve blocks are used and topical anesthesia placed. The area is marked, cleansed (prepped) and sprayed with a freezing agent. A high-speed rotary wheel abrades the upper layers of skin and smoothes the irregular surface. Healing from the dermabrasion treatment usually occurs within a week. The skin is pink at first and cover up make up can be used after about 10 days. Your new skin will be a little swollen, sensitive and bright pink for several weeks. It is important to avoid direct sunlight for 6 weeks post procedure and to use sunscreen on a regular basis. It is important to protect your new skin from the sun until the pigment has fully returned to your skin – for as long as 6 to 12 months after your procedure.
